Three different clay bodies are used in
this piece, each with their own characteristics and color. I
really enjoy how their colors play against one another. The
outermost pod of “Grogzilla” clay, is very
rough and textured, and portrays our rough and protective
exterior very well; the middle pod of Black Mountain sculpture
clay shows how often people see the less noble side of their
own kind; the innermost pod of Southern Ice porcelain paperclay
captures the beauty and softness in all of us. Other than a
light iron oxide wash on the “Grogzilla” clay, no
glazes are used. The ascending heights of the inner pods are
deliberate. The nested pods are mounted onto a solid aluminum
base.
