“Summer Grasses” series is a
rather subdued set of raku vases with natural bamboo handles,
gathered and seasoned from the artist's own garden. There are
three of them, however, each stands as an individual sculpture,
with its own personality. It borrows its quiet esthetics from
Chinese brush painting and from the Japanese, the minimal
application of color. In fact, it can almost be viewed as a
black-on-white brush painting on clay. “Summer Grasses
has its own story to tell. My inspiration is from the
well-known Japanese Haiku poet, Basho (1644 - 1694). His most
famous poem affected me deeply and this series came out of
it.”
